ICC Suffers Huge Losses After Hosting T20 World Cup 2024 in USA
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is facing significant losses after hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA. According to a report by news agency PTI, the ICC incurred losses of around USD 20 million, equivalent to Rs 167 crore, for organizing the event in the United States.
The ICC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is set to begin in Colombo, with one of the key topics being the financial impact of the USA leg of the T20 World Cup. While this topic is not officially part of the agenda, it will be discussed as a post-event report.
A major portion of the T20 World Cup was held in the Americas, including the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in New York on June 9. The exact financial figures will be disclosed during the ICC conference, but it is believed that the losses are close to the reported amount.
In addition to the financial losses, the ICC AGM will also address the transition of leadership within the organization. There is speculation that BCCI secretary Jay Shah will take over as the new ICC chairman from New Zealand’s Greg Barclay by the end of this year or early next year.
“It is not about how but when, as he still has one year left as BCCI secretary before his cooling off period in Indian board starts in 2025 as per constitution. However, if he has to take over in 2025, then Barclay can’t complete his third term of two years from December 2024 to December 2026,” an ICC source stated.
The financial losses incurred by the ICC for hosting the T20 World Cup in the USA and the upcoming leadership transition will be key areas of discussion during the AGM, shaping the future direction of the international cricket governing body.
