Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj Inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame
Indian tennis legends Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj have made history by becoming the first exponents of the sport from Asia to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Paes, known for his numerous Grand Slam titles and Olympic success, was honored in the ‘Player Category,’ while Amritraj, a former Davis Cup finalist, was recognized in the ‘Contributor Category’ alongside Richard Evans.
Paes, who has enjoyed a successful career spanning seven Olympic Games and multiple Grand Slam victories, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, stating, “A few of us are very blessed to be born into legacy.” He credited his journey to the support of fans and his passion for the sport that has driven him to success.
Amritraj, a key player on India’s Davis Cup squad in the 1970s and 1980s, reflected on the impact of his parents on his tennis career, calling their guidance “extraordinary.” He emphasized the importance of Indian support throughout his career and expressed his gratitude for the growth and success he has experienced alongside the country.
Both Paes and Amritraj were presented with Hall of Fame blazers at the official Induction Celebration, where they were recognized for their contributions to the sport of tennis. Their induction marks a significant moment in Asian tennis history, highlighting their achievements and inspiring future generations of players.
