Met Gala 2024: Everything you need to know

The Met Gala, fashion’s most illustrious event, is just around the corner. From its inception as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, it has transformed into a global spectacle, often referred to as “The Party of the Year.” Here’s what you need to know about this year’s Met Gala.

Scheduled for May 6, the Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Benefit, will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The event, which marks the pinnacle of the fashion calendar, will begin with red carpet arrivals around 5 p.m. ET and end approximately by 8 p.m. ET. However, notable guests, like Rihanna, have been known to make later appearances.

This year’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” sets the tone for the event. Inspired by the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, the dress code, “The Garden of Time,” suggests a plethora of floral and botanical looks. The exhibit itself will feature around 250 rare items, including designs by Schiaparelli and Dior, grouped into three main “zones” representing Land, Sea, and Sky, to emphasize natural resources and sustainable design.

The gala’s hosts this year include Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, and the ever-present Anna Wintour. The honorary chairs are Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, and Shou Chew, CEO of TikTok. Zendaya, known for her remarkable fashion choices, is expected to once again captivate the red carpet with her attire, possibly in collaboration with her stylist, Law Roach.

While the guest list remains a closely guarded secret until the night before the event, regular attendees such as Rihanna, Gisele Bundchen, and Kendall Jenner are anticipated. Tickets for the event are priced at $75,000, and final approval of the guest list rests with Anna Wintour.

For those eager to catch a glimpse of the Met Gala, Vogue will be livestreaming the red carpet arrivals on its website. The event will also be broadcast on the E! network’s “Live From E!” Additionally, social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are sure to be buzzing with memes, hot takes, and outfit reviews during the event.
