Locarno International Film Festival Unveils Diverse Lineup for 77th Edition

The highly anticipated Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland has recently unveiled a diverse and exciting lineup for its 77th edition, which is set to take place from August 7 to 17. The festival will showcase a total of 225 films, including 104 world premieres, five international premieres, and debut features from renowned directors such as Hong Sang-soo, Paz Vega, and Radu Jude.

The opening night of the festival will feature the world premiere of Gianluca Jodice’s “Le Déluge” starring Mélanie Laurent and Guillaume Canet. French stars Laurent and Canet will also receive the Excellence Award Davide Campari, adding to the excitement of the festival’s kickoff.

In addition to the new films, the festival will also feature a selection of film festival favorites and classics in the main Piazza Grande section. From Cannes hits like Laetitia Dosch’s “Dog on Trial” and Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” to classics like Jane Campion’s “The Piano” and the 4K restored director’s cut of Tarsem Singh’s “The Fall,” attendees can expect a diverse range of screenings.

Some of the highly anticipated world premieres at the festival include Paz Vega’s feature directorial debut “Rita,” César Díaz’s “Mexico 86” starring Bérénice Béjo, and Gianluca Jodice’s historical drama “Le Déluge” starring Laurent and Canet.

The festival will also pay homage to late avant-garde filmmaker Stan Brakhage with a special 10-film retrospective, adding a touch of nostalgia and reverence to the event.

With a focus on showcasing a wide array of voices and perspectives in cinema, the festival has also highlighted the significant presence of female filmmakers, with 34.9 percent of the films in the selection coming from female directors.

In addition to the film screenings, the festival will honor Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan with the Pardo alla Carriera award, French-Swiss actress Irène Jacob with the Leopard Club Award, and indie producer Stacey Sher with the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico Award.

The festival promises to be an exciting and thought-provoking event, offering film enthusiasts a diverse and engaging cinematic experience. With a lineup that includes a mix of new talent and seasoned directors, the Locarno International Film Festival is set to captivate audiences from around the world.
