Lewes in Bloom Prepares for International Challenge After Willow Fencing Renovations

LEWES, Del. – The volunteers at Lewes in Bloom have been hard at work preparing for the Communities in Bloom International Challenge following a recent renovation to repair their specialized willow fencing.

Renowned artisan Howard Peller traveled from Ohio to Lewes to complete a three-day project in the historic Fisher-Martin Herb Garden. The founder of Lewes in Bloom, Warren Golde, made it a priority to ensure that the willow fencing was restored and in top shape before the competition.

Having won national competitions multiple times, Lewes in Bloom is eligible to enter the international challenge. In 2018, the organization claimed victory in the international challenge for the first time.

Two expert judges from Belgium and Hungary are in town to assess volunteer efforts in various categories such as community, environment, heritage, trees, landscape, and plant and floral displays. The judges arrived on July 18 and began their evaluations on July 19.

As part of their visit, the judges enjoyed breakfast with the Mayor and City Council, watched a video showcasing the town’s gardens, and met with Lewes in Bloom volunteers. To enhance the judges’ experience, live Celtic music was played at Mary Vessels Park, adding to the town’s historic charm.

While the floral displays are a significant aspect of the competition, Dr. Andrea Bucsi, one of the judges, was impressed by the enthusiasm of all the volunteers working towards improving the quality of life in Lewes.

Pamela Rankin, co-lead patron of Lewes in Bloom, shared the dedication she and her team put into maintaining the award-winning garden, including cleaning up and preparing for the event.

Members of the community were encouraged to take care of their own gardens during the judges’ visit, as they would be evaluating the town as a whole, not just the ones tended by Lewes in Bloom.

The results of the international challenge will be announced at an award ceremony in Canada at the end of September. Stay tuned to see if Lewes in Bloom can add another victory to their impressive record.
