To protect children from deadly diseases, the state government vaccinates children as young as five years old. In addition, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) is given to infants up to 9 months of age to protect against pneumonia. But for the last one and a half to two months, this vaccine is not available in urban and rural areas of Thane district and thousands of children are being deprived of this vaccine. Meanwhile, some medical officials on condition of anonymity said that the state government is not getting adequate supply of these vaccines and there is shortage of these vaccines in the state as well as in Thane district.

The state government recently conducted a polio campaign. The campaign was implemented by municipal corporations in urban areas of Thane district and district councils in rural areas. Many children have been given polio doses. Similarly, to protect children from various diseases, the state government provides free vaccinations to five-year-old children. These include vaccinations against tuberculosis, polio, hepatitis B, pertussis, whooping cough, tetanus, Hib-meningitis and pneumonia, measles and rubella, Japanese encephalitis (JE) and rotavirus (diarrhea). Also, to reduce the risk of pneumonia in children, the state government provides pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) to children up to 9 months of age. All these vaccinations are administered to children through Municipal and District Parishad Health Centers. But since last one and a half to two months pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is not available in Thane district and due to this information has come to light that children are being deprived of this vaccine. Meanwhile, while the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is not available, the state government is trying to make this vaccine available. However, some medical officials on condition of anonymity said that the shortage of these vaccines in Thane district is due to inadequate supply of these vaccines as well as the state government itself.

Two to three thousand children are administered pneumococcal conjugate vaccine every month in Thane municipal area. Between 1 and 5 thousand children are given this vaccine every month in the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal area. Thousands of children are given this vaccine every month in Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, Badlapur. 11,000 children are vaccinated every month in rural areas of five taluks of Thane district. Children are at risk of contracting pneumonia due to not getting this vaccine for the last one and a half to two months.
