MumbaiMaharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday reconstituted the sub-committee for Maratha reservation in educational institutions and government jobs and appointed higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil as its head.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a statement that the committee headed by Patil would consider legal and technical aspects to ensure the preservation of the Maratha community. Other members of the committee are state ministers Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Girish Mahajan, Dada Vuse, Shambhuraj Desai and Uday Samant.
Earlier, the sub-committee was headed by Ashok Chavan, minister in the then Maha Vikas Aghadi government. In May 2021, the Supreme Court struck down a Maharashtra law that reserved the Maratha community in educational institutions and government jobs.
The apex court termed it “unconstitutional” and said that the 50 per cent reservation limit set by the Supreme Court’s Mandal judgment in 1992 cannot be exceeded. (agency)
