Police were first on the scene at Orchard Close at 5pm yesterday afternoon and were soon joined by several fire crews, including engines from Leigh, Atherton and Bolton North.
Emergency personnel were concerned for the well-being of the man, who did not want to come out of his house.
After a six-hour ordeal, the man is now being treated in hospital after being sectioned according to the Mental Health Act.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “We received a call at around 5pm yesterday to an address on Orchard Close, Leigh, with concerns for the welfare of a man in his 50s.
“No fire has actually occurred.
“The man has been sectioned and taken to hospital at 11pm last night where he is now receiving treatment.”
