Crops destroyed by floods, roads blocked, prices of vegetables skyrocket across the country…

LAHORE (Daily Pakistan Online) Floods in four provinces of Pakistan have destroyed millions of acres of crops, blocked roads, causing vegetable prices to skyrocket.

Tomato and onion prices have increased in other cities including Lahore. In many cities onion is being sold for more than 300 rupees per kg, tomato price has reached 250 to 300 rupees per kg. Federal Finance Minister Miftah Ismail yesterday hinted that trade with India may be opened to reduce the price of vegetables in the country.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Food Security has decided to allow import of onions and tomatoes within 24 hours. Importers can import onions and tomatoes. The ministry has advised the FBR that taxes and duties on import of onion and tomato will be waived for the next 90 days.
