Goa Tourism Minister Highlights Increase in International Footfall as State Targets New Markets

Goa, popularly known for its pristine beaches and vibrant party scene, is now aiming to attract a new wave of tourists from emerging markets around the world. The international footfall in Goa was severely affected during the Covid-19 pandemic, with only 33,000 visitors in a year. However, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte announced in the state assembly that the numbers have now surged to 4.5 lakh for this particular year.

In response to the challenges posed by the Russia-Ukraine war and other global issues impacting international tourism, Khaunte outlined Goa’s strategy to tap into untapped markets through active participation in global trade fairs. The state is looking to change the perception of Goa as a destination beyond just its beaches, emphasizing the rich cultural heritage and diverse experiences it has to offer.

The government has invested significantly in promoting Goa through various events, with a special focus on showcasing the state in emerging markets such as South East Asia, South Asia, the US, UAE, and Germany. By participating in renowned events like World Travel Mart (WTM) London and ITB Berlin, Goa aims to attract quality tourists and boost its tourism industry.

Khaunte highlighted the importance of engaging in fruitful business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) meetings during these events to secure partnerships and collaborations for the future. The shift in focus from traditional tourism markets to new, promising destinations signals Goa’s commitment to reinventing itself as a global travel hotspot.

With the tourism department’s proactive approach and collaboration with other states to attract international tourists, Goa is set to position itself as a must-visit destination for travelers seeking unique experiences and cultural immersion beyond the sun and sand.
