Swimmer Gavin Schinkelshoek Prepares for Second Appearance at International Children’s Games

Swimmer Gavin Schinkelshoek, a 15-year-old from Pain Court, Ontario, is gearing up for the International Children’s Games for the second time, and this year, he is feeling the pressure. Having won two medals at last year’s event, Schinkelshoek is excited but also knows the challenge that lies ahead.

As a member of the Windsor Aquatic Club’s team in Leon, Mexico, Schinkelshoek will be competing against over 1,500 athletes from more than 80 cities and 40 countries. With the experience from last year’s games in Daegu, South Korea, Schinkelshoek is prepared to give his best performance.

Reflecting on his preparations, Schinkelshoek mentioned the importance of cooldowns and consistent hydration during competitions. Despite the added pressure, he also sees this opportunity as a chance to help his teammates navigate the event, especially those who are new to the competition.

In addition to his participation in the International Children’s Games, Schinkelshoek had a successful year at the Ontario championships, winning six medals. He emphasized the importance of giving his best effort in every race and showcased his competitive spirit at events like the Canadian Open and Olympic trials.

Looking back at his achievements from last year, including a silver in the 50-meter backstroke and a bronze in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, Schinkelshoek hopes to once again reach the podium. As he navigates the challenges of competing at a different altitude, he remains focused on performing at his best when it counts.

As he prepares to represent the Windsor region at the 56th International Children’s Games, Schinkelshoek emphasizes the values of kindness, sportsmanship, and appreciation for volunteers. Despite the competition, he aims to support and celebrate all athletes, regardless of their ability level.

With his sights set on Grade 10 at Pain Court secondary school, Schinkelshoek’s journey to the International Children’s Games is a testament to his dedication and passion for swimming, inspired by his older brother Cameron’s participation in the games in 2022.
