Gabrielle Union’s Met Gala Dress Inspired by Daughter Kaavia: “She’s a Water Baby” (Exclusive)

Gabrielle Union stunned at the 2024 Met Gala in a mermaid-like gown that had a special inspiration: her 5-year-old daughter, Kaavia. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Union revealed that Kaavia, her “water baby,” was the muse behind her breathtaking look.

Union, 51, walked the red carpet alongside her husband Dwyane Wade, marking their fifth appearance at the prestigious fashion event. Her high-neck Michael Kors dress featured a stunning ombré scale pattern of lilac, green, and teal, resembling a mermaid’s tail, which was in line with her daughter’s observation.

“This is inspired by her,” Union explained, referring to Kaavia. “She’s a water baby — she loves the water. And she was like, ‘Mommy, you look like a mermaid!’ “

Kaavia’s affinity for water isn’t new; she has been a “water baby” since infancy. Videos shared by her father, Dwyane Wade, show her remarkable swimming abilities, including the fact that she could swim with her head underwater at just 8 months old.

Explaining Kaavia’s early swimming prowess, Union referenced a June 2012 article published on Live Science, stating that babies are born with a reflex called the bradycardic response, allowing them to hold their breath automatically underwater.

Union has been archiving some of her clothing pieces for her daughter, hoping to share the stories behind them one day. “Even if [Kaavia] never wants to wear any of it, she will have this little bit of her mom and the stories that go with it,” Union shared earlier this year.
