Fremantle, a part of media giant Bertelsmann’s RTL Group, has recently announced a first-look drama development deal with Roughcut Television, the production firm co-founded by CEO Ash Atalla, known for producing hit shows like the original British version of “The Office” and “The IT Crowd.”

This agreement comes after the successful collaboration between the two companies on Paramount+ U.K. & Ireland psychological thriller series “Little Disasters,” starring Diane Kruger and Jo Joyner. Roughcut Television, mostly recognized for its comedy shows like “Big Boys,” “Stath Lets Flats,” and “Cuckoo,” has also made a mark with recent drama series “Coma” on Channel 5.

According to the companies, this deal will make Fremantle the primary home for Roughcut TV’s scripted drama projects, working closely with Fremantle’s global drama and international distribution divisions. The collaboration is seen as a significant step for Roughcut as they aim to expand their footprint in the drama genre.

Ash Atalla, CEO of Roughcut Television, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Our goal is to build fast and become one of a new generation of global drama suppliers.” Rebecca Dundon, senior vp scripted content, international at Fremantle, also commended Roughcut’s commercial sensibility and creative vision.
