Former Rep. George Santos sentenced to 87 months for federal fraud charges

Former U.S. Representative George Santos was sentenced to 87 months in prison for aggravated identity theft and wire fraud related to his 2022 campaign. The judge mandated he surrender by July 25. During sentencing, Santos expressed remorse for betraying the public’s trust, while prosecutors highlighted his deceit and lavish spending. Despite requesting a minimal two-year sentence citing personal hardships, Santos was held accountable for his fraudulent actions, which included theft of funds meant for Covid-19 unemployment benefits. He had previously been expelled from Congress following multiple scandals and had pleaded guilty to the charges.
