Former NFL Exec Criticizes Pete Prisco’s Lions’ First-Round Pick Prediction

Former NFL general manager Rick Spielman slams CBS Sports analyst Pete Prisco for suggesting the Detroit Lions will draft Washington State safety Jaden Hicks in the first round of the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.

Prisco’s final mock draft places Hicks as the Lions’ choice at No. 29, a prediction that has drawn sharp criticism from Spielman. The ex-Minnesota Vikings GM rebuked Prisco, urging him to “learn the game,” implying that the selection doesn’t align with strategic NFL draft thinking. While the Lions have safety needs, banking on Hicks, often slated for a Day 2 pick, appears speculative. Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu are slated starters, but both have concerns—Joseph recovering from surgery, Melifonwu with a history of injuries and limited starts. Brian Branch is an option, though Lions aim to keep him in the slot. Coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the need for safety reinforcement but hints at a potential Day 2 selection unless a versatile prospect like Cooper DeJean emerges.
