Florida family files lawsuit against NASA following debris from space station falling through their home’s roof

Family in Florida sues NASA after space junk crashes through home’s roof

A Florida family has taken legal action against NASA after a piece of space junk from the International Space Station crashed through their home’s roof in March. The cylindrical object, which turned out to be a metal support used to mount old batteries on a cargo pallet for disposal, caused extensive damage to the family’s property in Naples.

The homeowners, Alejandro Otero and his family, have filed a lawsuit to recover damages resulting from the incident. Their claim includes non-insured property damage loss, business interruption damages, emotional/mental anguish damages, and costs for assistance from third parties required in the process.

In an interview with television station WINK, Otero expressed his disbelief and gratitude that no one was physically harmed in the incident. Attorney Mica Nguyen Worthy emphasized the seriousness of space debris issues, noting that if the object had landed just a few feet away, the outcome could have been catastrophic.

While NASA confirmed that the hardware was expected to fully burn up upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, they will have six months to respond to the family’s claims. The space agency reiterated their commitment to responsibly operating in low Earth orbit and mitigating risks to protect people on Earth.

The Otero family’s lawsuit sheds light on the potential dangers posed by space debris and the need for accountability in managing space operations to ensure the safety of individuals on the ground.
