Cycling News: Knibbs Steps Down from US Olympic Team, Faulkner Takes Her Place in Paris Road Race

Sports News | Knibbs Resigns Spot on US Cycling Team for Paris Olympics Road Race, Faulkner Replaces Her

American cyclist Taylor Knibbs has made the decision to resign from her spot on the U.S. cycling team for the road race at the Paris Olympics, opening the door for Kristen Faulkner to take her place. Knibbs, a two-time defending women’s Ironman 70.3 world champion, had initially been selected to compete alongside Chloe Dygert in the Olympic road race and time trial.

However, Knibbs, whose specialty is the triathlon, ultimately decided to prioritize that event at the upcoming Summer Games. This move was not entirely unexpected, given her background in the triathlon and the demands of her multisport schedule.

While Knibbs will still compete in the time trial on July 27, she has chosen to withdraw from the road race on August 4. This decision allows her three days of recovery before participating in the triathlon on July 31.

The organizing committee for the Paris Olympics recently unveiled backup plans for certain events, including triathlon and marathon swimming, due to unsafe levels of E. coli detected in the Seine River. In a worst-case scenario, the triathlon could become a duathlon with swimming eliminated from the event.

In light of Knibbs’ withdrawal, Kristen Faulkner, the reigning U.S. road race champion, will now compete in the Olympic road race. Faulkner, known for her abilities on the road, has the potential to vie for a medal in the event.

With Dygert set to compete in both the road race and time trial, where she is favored to win gold, before transitioning to the velodrome to join the pursuit team, the U.S. cycling team remains strong despite Knibbs’ departure.

The reshuffling of the U.S. cycling team for the Paris Olympics adds an intriguing twist to the upcoming competitions. Fans and supporters will undoubtedly be eager to see how Faulkner performs in the road race and how Knibbs fares in the triathlon, as both athletes pursue their Olympic dreams.
