Colombia Stuns Panama with 5-0 Victory to Advance to Copa America Semifinals

The Colombian national football team put on a masterclass performance as they overwhelmed Panama with a resounding 5-0 victory at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, securing their spot in the Copa America semifinals. James Rodriguez, the Colombian star, showcased his brilliance by scoring one goal and providing two assists in a dominant display.

The match started with Colombia taking an early lead in the eighth minute when striker Jhon Cordoba scored a powerful header from a corner. Shortly after, a foul by Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera on Jhon Arias inside the box led to a penalty for Colombia.

James Rodriguez stepped up to take the penalty with confidence and in the 15th minute, he struck the ball into the top of the goal, marking his 28th successful finish for his national team.

Despite a brief period of possession for Panama, Colombia remained in control throughout the match. The Colombian team capitalized on another set-piece opportunity in the 41st minute when James Rodriguez’s free kick found Luis Diaz in a prime position to extend Colombia’s lead with a skillful chip over the goalkeeper.

In the second half, Colombia focused on managing the game and preserving their lead. They managed to extend their advantage in the 70th minute when Richard Rios capitalized on a defensive error in the Panama backline to score a low drive from distance.

The icing on the cake for Colombia came in stoppage time when Miguel Borja converted a penalty after a foul on Santiago Arias, sealing the 5-0 victory.

The win extends Colombia’s unbeaten run to an impressive 27 matches, with their last defeat coming in a 1-0 loss to Argentina in February 2022. Colombia will now face their semifinal opponent in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday.

Despite the loss, Panama can be proud of their performance in the tournament, with a standout victory over hosts and CONCACAF rivals, the United States. This quarterfinal appearance marks Panama’s best performance in the Copa America since their group-stage exit in the 2016 edition.

In the other semifinal, defending champions Argentina will take on Canada in New Jersey on Tuesday, setting up an exciting matchup for football fans.
