ByteDance in Discussions with Broadcom Regarding Potential TSMC-Manufactured AI Chip for Tiktok

ByteDance and Broadcom Discuss Potential Collaboration on AI Processor

ByteDance Ltd. and Broadcom Inc. in Talks for AI Processor Collaboration

ByteDance Ltd., the parent company of TikTok, is in discussions with U.S. chip designer Broadcom Inc. for a potential collaboration on an AI processor. This collaboration aims to enhance ByteDance’s development of AI technology, with a focus on a 5-nanometer purpose-built chip.

While no deal has been finalized yet, the proposed chip would comply with U.S. trade restrictions on China. Broadcom currently supplies an older-generation 7nm AI processor for use in ByteDance’s data centers. If an agreement is reached, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. would manufacture the customized chip.

This partnership between ByteDance and Broadcom is significant in the context of Washington’s efforts to limit Chinese chipmaking ambitions. By securing a steady supply of chips, ByteDance aims to keep up with global competitors like Meta Platforms Inc. and Google, who are also investing in their own AI chip development.

ByteDance’s prioritization of AI technology is evident in its popular AI chatbot Doubao and its efforts to innovate in the AI space. Representatives for ByteDance, Broadcom, and TSMC have not commented on the discussions yet.

The potential collaboration between ByteDance and Broadcom highlights the growing importance of AI technology in the tech industry and the strategic partnerships being forged to stay competitive in this rapidly evolving field.
