Avian Flu Claims Bottlenose Dolphin in Florida: Researchers Report

In a concerning development, a bottlenose dolphin in Florida succumbed to a lethal strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), highlighting the threat this virus poses beyond avian species.

Recently, University of Florida researchers revealed the demise of a bottlenose dolphin after conducting a necropsy. The unfortunate mammal was discovered distressed in a canal in 2022. Subsequent examination unveiled signs of the HPAI strain, with inflammation in the brain and leptomeninges disease evident. Further testing identified avian flu in the dolphin’s brain and lungs, underscoring the unprecedented transmission of the virus across species barriers.

As investigations continue, this incident underscores the pressing need for heightened vigilance and further research into the potential cross-species transmission of HPAI. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
