International Symposium on Amyloidosis Hosted in Rochester, Mayo Clinic Leads the Way

The International Symposium on Amyloidosis has arrived in Rochester, bringing together over 1,000 physicians and scientists from around the world to discuss advancements in the understanding and treatment of this rare disease. Amyloidosis occurs when a specific protein called amyloid builds up in organs, leading to dysfunction.

Dr. Angela Dispenzieri, a researcher at the Mayo Clinic specializing in plasma cell disorders, emphasized the importance of collaboration at the conference. “These amyloidosis diseases affect so many different tissues, and when we learn from each other, we can hopefully improve outcomes for our patients,” she said.

The event, which was announced two years ago, required the coordination of dozens of workers, including registration staff, event planners, and audiovisual crews. Joe Ward, president of the Mayo Civic Center and Experience Rochester, highlighted the dedication of over 50 team members who have been involved in planning the symposium.

While this year’s conference is set to run until the end of the week, the excitement for future gatherings is already building. The next symposium is scheduled to take place in Uruguay in 2026. Stay tuned for updates on the latest developments in amyloidosis research and treatment.
