Investment in U.S. Semiconductor Wafer Manufacturing Facilities to Boost Technology Leadership
The United States is investing $400 million to boost critical semiconductor wafer production in Texas and Missouri, ushering in a new era of semiconductor manufacturing in the country.
The Department of Commerce announced the investment through the CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to establish domestic production of semiconductor chips. This move is seen as crucial to advancing the nation’s global technology leadership.
The project will involve building manufacturing facilities for semiconductor wafers in both states, with manufacturing firm GlobalWafers and its subsidiaries playing a key role in bolstering America’s semiconductor supply chain.
These facilities are expected to generate about $4 billion in combined capital expenditures and create 2,000 jobs in Texas and Missouri. The domestic production of semiconductors is also expected to improve economic and national security for Americans.
President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of domestic semiconductor production, citing the need to ensure the security of electronic devices used in various applications.
The announcement comes as the United States and Mexico prepare to co-host the America’s Partnership Semiconductor Symposium in September, focusing on expanding and diversifying the semiconductor supplier ecosystem for participating nations.
Overall, the investment is a significant step towards strengthening the semiconductor industry in the United States and reducing reliance on foreign sources for critical components.
